What is McTimoney?

McTimoney is a gentle, whole-body form of chiropractic. It uses light, quick and precise adjustments made with the hands, and it looks at how the whole body is working together, not just the area that hurts.

Where it comes from

McTimoney chiropractic is named after John McTimoney, a British chiropractor who spent his career developing a gentler way of working. At a time when some chiropractors were using more vigorous techniques, he gave his method a name to help patients understand that chiropractors can work in different ways.

In 1972 he founded the Oxfordshire School of Chiropractic, which went on to become the McTimoney College of Chiropractic. Today it's one of the UK's recognised chiropractic colleges, where I trained for my integrated master's degree (MChiro).

How it's different

Every chiropractor in the UK is regulated by the General Chiropractic Council, whatever technique they use. What makes McTimoney distinctive is its approach:

  • Light, precise touch. Adjustments are quick and gentle, with no forceful twisting.

  • The whole body. I look at your spine, pelvis, shoulders, limbs and skull, because how one area moves can affect another.

  • Hands only. No instruments or machines, just careful, practised touch.

What it feels like

Most people are surprised by how gentle it is. You stay fully clothed, lying comfortably on the treatment couch. The adjustments are quick and light, and many people find the session relaxing.

Some people feel a little sore or tired for a day or two afterwards, which usually passes quickly. I'll always explain what I'm doing before I begin, and you're free to ask questions, pause or stop at any point.

What a session involves

Your first appointment starts with a conversation about your health, your history and what's brought you in, followed by an examination and any relevant tests. If McTimoney is right for you, you may have your first treatment in the same session. If I think someone else is better placed to help, I'll tell you.

Follow-up appointments take 20–30 minutes. Alongside treatment, I'll share simple guidance on posture, movement and breathing to carry on at home.

Is it right for me?

Many people choose McTimoney because they'd prefer a gentle approach, or because they've felt unsure about chiropractic in the past. If you're not sure, book a free 15-minute Spine Screen, a no-pressure chance to meet me, ask questions and find out.
