Sciatica

Sciatica describes pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the leg, sometimes with tingling or numbness. It can be sharp or a deep ache, and it often affects sleep, sitting and walking.

Understanding what's going on

Sciatica is a description of symptoms, not a single cause, so the first step is a careful assessment. We'll talk about when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it's affecting your day. I'll carry out relevant neurological and orthopaedic tests to check what's going on.

How I work

I look at your lower back, pelvis, hips and the way your whole body is moving, not just the painful leg. I use McTimoney, a gentle technique with light, precise adjustments. (Find out more about McTimoney) I'll also suggest simple movement and positions that may help between visits.

When to get urgent help

Please contact your GP, NHS 111 or A&E straight away if you have leg pain with numbness around your bottom or genitals, new problems controlling your bladder or bowels, or weakness that's getting worse. These need checking urgently.
